Listen to the Science: Affirmations Build Brain Power

Many years ago I set myself on a journey to find the answer to a question I had been pondering for years. “How can I renew my mind and be transformed?” For years I’d heard the scripture referenced, “…be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).” This is a reality I wanted for myself and science would help usher me to the answer.

In the groundbreaking book, Who Switched Off My Brain, by Dr. Caroline Leaf I got a closer look at the amazing power of the brain. The brain is still a mystery. One thing is clear: we have more control of our thoughts than we know. Think of a thought like a rubber band. Before the thought makes its way to becoming a permanent resident we can decide whether it stays or goes. We have a 48-hour window to determine if the thought helps or hinders.

 It is still pliable and can be shaped. If it hinders it must be evicted. This is amazing! I wish you could see the smile on my face. 

This brain awareness coupled with the tools to build mental muscle can be revolutionary. Affirmations are effective in reshaping old harmful thoughts and serving as a gatekeeper for new thoughts trying to enter. The idea (pun intended) is to create a mental environment that honors and affirms who you are, Self-affirmation theory.

Let the affirming begin

David Hanscom, MD leverages affirmations in his practice to support patient healing. According to Dr. Hanscom, affirmations help us to challenge and defeat self-sabotaging thoughts. Just as we do repetitive physical exercise to get stronger, affirmations can be thought of as exercise for our mind/brain. Affirmations are typically positive, optimistic statements we create or use those that others have created that resonate with us. We can use the same one for days or weeks or vary them from day-to-day. Here is a short list to get you started.

  1. My body is healthy; my mind is brilliant, my spirit is tranquil.
  2. I believe I can do anything
  3. I forgive those who have harmed me in my past and peacefully detach from them.
  4. My ability to conquer challenges is limitless; my potential to succeed is infinite.
  5. I can achieve greatness.

Benefits of building brain power

Unfortunately, much of the internal chatter that is affirmed is harmful and is a threat. Our thoughts drive behavior and actions speak louder than words. Embracing a daily diet of affirming language has proven to improve overall physical and mental health. The benefits are endless. Here are six to boost your mental immune health.

  3. Affirmations boost confidence
  4. Affirmations lead to better health
  5. Affirmations cultivate better relationships
  6. Affirmations set us up for success

If you are new to the idea of affirmations take small steps select one and focus on the one for 1-2 weeks. The idea is to start small but start. If you’re a pro and this is a daily practice consider developing your own affirmations.
